Women Lead OVC Track ChampionshipsPublished by
NASHVILLE Eastern Illinois women's track stands in first place following the opening day of the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Championships. The EIU men were in sixth place following the first day of competition. The Panther women had three first place finishes while the EIU men had one gold medal. EIU women's team scored 70 points with Tennessee State in second at 39.5 and Jacksonville State in third with 31 points. Southeast Missouri holds the men's lead with 69.5 points. EIU is sixth with 27 points. Haleigh Knapp won the women's high jump clearing 6'00.50". Knapp's winning jump increased her own school record while setting the OVC Record. Knapp broke the previous OVC record of 5'11.25" set in 1983. Maria Baldwin led a 1-2 finish for the EIU women in the 10,000 meter run to close out the first night of competition. Baldwin won with a time of 36:31.59. Teammate Ivy Handley was second with a time of 36:44.54. Sisters Ruth Garippo and Rachel Garippo both medaled for the Panthers in the women's steeplechase. Ruth Garippo won the event with a time of 10:49.66. Rachel Garippo was third with a time of 10:58.11. Eric Gordon picked up a gold medal for the EIU men winning the pole vault. Gordon cleared 16'00.75" to win the event. Riley McInerney placed third in the men's steeplechase to win the bronze medal with a time of 9:10.79. Bryn Buckwalter placed third in the women's discus to win the bronze medal with a throw of 149'4". Competition resumes with the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.
