Cross Country Concludes Season At NCAA Regional

IOWA CITY, Iowa Eastern Illinois men's and women's cross country wrapped up the 2016 season on Friday afternoon competing at the NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by the University of Iowa at the Ashton Cross Country Course. The Panther men placed 16th in a field of 26 schools competing for the first time this season at the 10K distance. Seniors Riley McInerney and Paxson Menard both finished in the top 50 to lead the team. The EIU women placed 20th in a field of 33 schools competing at the 6K distance. Senior Ruth Garippo was the top finisher for EIU in 65th place. Garippo was one of three EIU runners in the top 100 in the regional. McInerney was the Panthers top finisher placing 33rd in the field with a time of 31:02.5. Menard was just seven seconds behind placing 41st with a personal best time of 31:09. Tyler Yunk finished in the top 100 in the men's field placing 90th with a time of 32:08.1. Marcus Skinner and Juan Barajas rounded out the top five scored runners for the EIU men. Skinner was 137th with a time of 32:48.7. Barajas was 143rd with a time of 32:54.6. The final two EIU competitors in the NCAA Midwest Regional were Chris Orlow placing 149th with a time of 33:08.7 and Robby Prescott finishing 156th with a time of 33:25.1. On the women's side Garippo placed 65th finishing as the Panthers top runner for the third straight meet. She posted a time of 21:31.8 just seven seconds off her 6K school record set nearly a month ago at Bradley. Ivy Handley was 81st with a time of 21:48.8 followed closely by Maria Baldwin in 85th with a time of 21:44.7. Rachel Garippo was 106th with a time of 22:01.2 and Julie James was the final EIU scored runner placing 161st with a time of 22:41.1. Emily Brelsfoard and Sadie Elliott were the final two EIU competitors at the NCAA Midwest Regional with Brelsfoard finishing 170th with a time of 22:45.4, while Elliott was 193rd with a time of 23:18.8 Luke Traynor of Tulsa won the men's individual honors with Oklahoma State winning the men's team title. Missouri had both the individual and team champion for the women with Karissa Schweizer winning the women's event.
