EIU Track Qualifies Three For NCAA Regional

CHARLESTON, Ill. Eastern Illinois track and field qualified three athletes for this year's NCAA West Regional which will take place May 26-28 in Lawrence, Kan. Haleigh Knapp and Brion Portis will represent the EIU women while Riley McInerney is the lone EIU men's competitor to advance to the Regional. This will be the first NCAA Regional appearance for all three athletes. The top 12 individuals in each event will advance to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Oregon in June. Knapp will compete in the women's high jump as she is ranked third in the NCAA West Region. Knapp extended her own school record and set the Ohio Valley Conference record in the high jump winning the conference championship with a height of 6'0.50." On the season Knapp has posted six first place finishes in the high jump clearing 5'10" or better in three meets. The women's high jump will take place on Friday at 5 p.m. Portis earned her way to the NCAA West Regional during the OVC Championships as she posted a season best triple jump mark of 41'1" at the conference championship meet. That distance ranks her third on the EIU career list in the event. Portis is currently ranked 38th in the NCAA West Region. The women's triple jump will take place on Saturday at 6:30 pm McInerney will be competing in the men's steeplechase on Friday evening at 9:30 p.m. McInerney placed third in the event at the OVC Championships and is currently ranked 40th in the NCAA West Region. His best time in the event this season was 8:58.00 at the Indiana State Gibson Invite where he won the event with his time ranking fourth on the EIU career list.
